We kind of dug her when she played newswriter Lisa Miller on the sitcom Newsradio, but it wasn’t until she was cast on the long running show ER as Abby Lockhart, who started off as a “troubled” nurse later becoming a “troubled” doctor that we really knew how much she rocked. No one thought anyone could replace the beloved Julianna Marguilles as the lead on that show after she left, but (with no disrespect towards Julianna) Maura’s Abby Lockhart was a complex character that audiences rooted and cheered for as she went through the challenges and celebrations in her life. After ER finished, she went through a series of acting roles, but her best role that we’ve rooted for had nothing at all to do with acting, that of a breast cancer survivor. Happy birthday Maura!
